Overview
Governance Views in DvSum help users organize and work with large amounts of metadata more efficiently. Instead of repeatedly searching, filtering, or navigating across different sections, users can create customized views to focus only on the information that matters to them.
For example, users can:
- Track recently updated assets
Example: Users can create a view to see all assets updated in the last 7 days, helping them stay up to date with recent changes. - Review assets with missing descriptions
Example: Users can create a view to identify assets with missing descriptions - Track assets by status
Example: Users can filter and view assets marked as “In Progress” or “Under Review” to follow up on pending updates.
For detailed information on applying filters for creating a view, refer to the governance view filtering article.
Create View
Navigate to the Dictionaries > Data Dictionary option in the left menu. This will take the user to the Data Dictionary listing page, where the Default Table view is initially shown. Choose the option to create a view of your preference.
On the "Create View" page:
- Provide view name
- Add/remove column for the view
- Specify criteria
Note: The user will not be able to Edit/ Share and Save the default view. These buttons will remain disabled.
The columns available in the current view will be automatically pre-selected.
Multi-Sort
Multi-sort allows users to organize data in a more structured and meaningful way by sorting on multiple columns instead of just one. This is especially useful when working with large datasets where a single level of sorting is not sufficient to understand or analyze the data effectively.
For example, instead of viewing a mixed list of assets, users can:
- First group records by Assigned To to see ownership
- Then sort within each group by Status to identify pending or completed items
- Further refine by Table Name for easier navigation
This layered sorting helps users quickly identify patterns, prioritize work, and locate specific records without manually scanning through the entire list.
The Default Sort Order can be configured directly in the UI, as shown below:
To apply multi-sort, hold the Ctrl key (or Cmd on Mac) and click on the columns you want to sort. Users will then see the rows ordered based on the hierarchy of columns selected, first by the primary column, then by the secondary, and so on.
Example: Ctrl+Click on the Source column header now includes it in the sorting:
Clone View
To create a clone of any view, users can click on the Edit pencil icon next to the view name. This action will reveal the clone button, allowing users to duplicate the selected view.
Share View
The view can be shared with other users by granting "Editor" or "Viewer" access.
- Users with "Editor" access have the capability to Edit, Clone, Delete, Share, Save, and Export operations with a view.
- Users with "Viewer" access can perform Share, Save, and Export operations with a view.
Saved View
The saved view will appear in the "Favorites" section of the views drop-down.
Delete View
To delete a particular view, click on the Edit button, and you will find a delete button available.
Export View
Simply click on the download button, and users can download the records available in the grid as an Excel file.
Note: For details on refining views using filters, refer to the article: How to Apply Filters in Governance Views.
Multi-Asset Governance Views
Multi-asset views allow users to bring together different asset types into a single view. This helps in understanding relationships and context without switching between multiple pages.
For example, users can:
- View databases, schemas, tables, and columns together to understand data structure
- View business glossary terms along with custom assets to understand their meaning
- See data quality rules with assets to understand how data quality is maintained
This helps users get a clear and complete view of their data in one place.
How It Works
- By default, All Asset Types is selected
- Users can choose multiple asset types while creating a view
- The view will display records from all selected asset types
Note: The Asset Type column is included by default and cannot be removed when multiple asset types are selected
Applying Criteria in Multi-Asset Views
When applying filters (criteria) in a multi-asset view:
- Filters can be applied to any available column.
- The list of columns available for filtering depends on the asset types you have selected.
This allows you to combine filters across both common columns (shared by multiple asset types) and asset-specific columns (unique to a particular asset type).
Columns in Multi-Asset Views
In the Choose Columns section:
- Users will see a combined list (union) of columns available across the selected asset types
- This allows flexibility in selecting relevant attributes from different asset types
If a column is used across multiple asset types, a tooltip will indicate how many asset types use that column.
Note: When working with the Multi-Asset View, the available columns are dependent on the selected asset types (Databases, Schemas, Tables, Columns). If any asset type is added or removed during configuration, both the “Specify Criteria” and “Choose Columns” sections are reset, and previously selected columns are moved back to the available list. In such cases, the columns need to be reselected. This can sometimes appear as if the view has lost columns or not all columns are visible.
View Identification
Views that include multiple asset types are displayed with an indicator icon next to the view name.
Mass update
When a view includes multiple assets that support mass updates, and a user selects custom attributes for the update, only the applicable asset types will be updated, while the others will be skipped.
