Clone Rule

In this article:

Introduction

Managing data quality (DQ) rules can be time-consuming, especially when similar rules need to be applied to multiple datasets. The Clone Rule feature simplifies this process by allowing users to duplicate existing rules while retaining their conditions, thresholds, and configurations. This eliminates the need for manual rule creation, saving time and ensuring consistency across different data sources.

With the Clone Rule functionality, users can:

  • Quickly duplicate rules with minor adjustments.
  • Assign cloned rules to different data sources.
  • Modify and manage cloned rules independently from the original rule.

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use the Clone Rule feature effectively.

What is Rule Cloning?

Rule cloning is the process of duplicating an existing Data Quality (DQ) rule while maintaining its core logic and settings. This functionality is beneficial when applying similar rules to different datasets or environments without recreating them from scratch.

How to Clone a Rule

Cloning a Single Rule from the DQ Dictionary Page

Step 1: Access the Clone Rule Option

  1. Navigate to the "DQ Dictionary" page.
  2. Select the rule you want to clone.
  3. Click on "More Actions" at the top.
  4. Select "Clone Rule" from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Configure Clone Settings

  • A Clone Rule modal will appear.
  • A prefix will be automatically assigned to indicate the cloned rule.
  • Select the target data source where the rule should be cloned.

Step 3: Review the Clone Summary

  • Once cloning is completed, the user is redirected to the Clone Summary detail page.
  • This page displays:
    • Original Rule ID and Cloned Rule ID (blank if cloning fails).
    • Default source and target source of the rule.
    • Cloning status (successful or failed).
    • Any remarks or errors in case of failed cloning.
  • Users can download a summary report from this page.

Cloning Multiple Rules from Different Sources

Step 4: Select Multiple Rules to Clone

  • Select multiple rules from different sources.
  • Follow the same process as Step 1 to initiate cloning.

Step 5: Configure Target Sources

  • In the Clone Rule modal, users will see both "From Source" and "To Source" options.
  • Define the new sources for the cloned rules.

Step 6: Review Cloning Summary

  • The Clone Summary page will display:
    • Number of successful and failed rule clones.
    • Error details for failed clones.

Cloning Multiple Rules with the Same Source

Step 7: Select Rules from the Same Source

  • Choose multiple rules that belong to the same source.
  • Click on "Clone Rule" as before.

Step 8: Define the Target Source

  • The Clone Rule modal will show only one target source (since all rules belong to the same source).
  • Modify the target source if needed.

Step 9: Execute Cloning & Verify Results

  • Click "Clone" to finalize duplication.
  • Once successful, the Clone Summary will show the duplicated rules with details.

Note:
A rule that has been cloned can be treated independently from the original (parent) rule on which the cloning was performed. This implies that any configurations made in the cloned rule will not affect the parent rule.

Cloning a Rule from the Rule Detail Page

Step 10: Clone Directly from the Rule Detail Page

  1. Navigate to the Rule Detail Page of an existing rule.
  2. Click on the three-dot menu (⋮) at the top right corner.
  3. Select "Clone Rule" from the options.

Step 11: Configure Clone Settings

  • A Clone Rule modal will appear.
  • The prefix of the cloned rule is displayed.
  • Select the target data source.

Step 12: Verify Cloning Success

  • The user is redirected to the Clone Summary page.
  • The Cloned Rule ID will be visible under the "Clone Rule" section.
